Joseph E. Walsh appointed by the United States District Court

Harness IP is pleased to announce that, in an Order issued on May 15, 2023, Joseph E. (Joe) Walsh, Jr. (St. Louis Principal) has been appointed by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri to serve as Chair of the Committee for the consideration of reappointment of Magistrate Judge Patricia L. Cohen.

Unlike Article III Judges who are nominated by the President of the United States, confirmed by the Senate, and serve life terms, Federal Magistrate Judges are decided upon by the District Court Judges in each of the 94 federal districts throughout the United States.  Magistrate Judges serve 8-year terms after which they can apply for re-appointment for additional 8-year terms.  When re-appointment is sought, a committee of at least seven persons (at least two of whom are recommended to be non-lawyers) is convened to investigate the performance of the Magistrate during the prior 8-year term and, within 90 days, issue a report to the Court concerning whether re-appointment is recommended.
