Veteran Trademark Attorney Beth Coakley is Named Among the “Top 250 Women in IP”

Beth Coakley, trademark attorney and Principal at Harness IP’s Metro Detroit office, has been named by Managing Intellectual Property to their global list of the “Top 250 Women in IP 2020.” She previously made this prestigious list in 2014, 2015, and 2019.

Coakley has been with Harness IP for nearly 28 years. She serves as the Chair of the firm’s Diversity Committee and has been a member since its founding. As Chair, Coakley continues to spearhead the firm’s inclusive hiring and employee retention practices. In an unofficial capacity, she is the firm’s senior trademark attorney and most senior woman Principal.

Coakley’s dedication to protecting her clients’ brands has led to several anti-counterfeiting campaigns in China, Hong Kong, and Russia. She has personally travelled to factories and foreign trademark offices in these countries to ensure that anti-counterfeiting raids are carried out. In one case, Coakley led the international efforts to stop a counterfeiting ring that was infringing the trademark rights of her client by producing a toy that was cheap imitation of her client’s toy, which, at the time, was the “Most Popular” toy in the U.S.

Coakley is the only IP attorney in Michigan to earn this distinction. In addition to making the “Top 250 Women in IP” list, Coakley has also been named a “Trademark Star” for 2020.

Published annually since 2013, Managing Intellectual Property’s “Top 250 Women in IP” list recognizes senior female IP practitioners in private practice who have performed exceptionally for their clients and firms in the past year. The practitioners were selected from the publication’s general IP Stars list, which we announced in April 2020. information about the annual list,
