“Trademark tactics for safeguarding gaming assets,” The Trademark Lawyer
In an article published in Issue 5 of The Trademark Lawyer on November 4, 2024, Harness IP Principal Matt Cutler, Of Counsel Paul Hoffer and General Counsel and Global Head of Licensing for Mob Entertainment Shelly Gayner, explained the significance of trademark protections in the gaming industry and how to go about protecting their intellectual property.
“Trademark registrations are a business asset and enhance the value of a company’s brand. Trademark owners can also record their federal trademark registrations with US Customs and Border Protection to aid in blocking imports that are infringing goods or are counterfeits,” they wrote.
The attorneys discussed how developers can get involved and work to protect their companies’ IP. “While it is helpful to have development teams come up with alternative names to search for, it is also recommended to limit the number of trademarks being searched because the more trademarks being searched, the more expensive the searches will be,” the authors explained.
