Joe Walsh and Bryan Wheelock Talk Middle Market IP on NCMM Podcast
Principals Joe Walsh and Bryan Wheelock are featured in the latest edition of “The Market that Moves America,” a podcast produced by The Ohio State University’s National Center for the Middle Market (NCMM).
In the segment, titled “Unlocking Hidden Value: Leveraging Intellectual Property for Middle Market Company Growth and Success,” Joe and Bryan discuss the necessity of protecting intellectual property for middle market companies. Led by host and NCMM Managing Director Doug Farren, the conversation focuses on often overlooked opportunities for growing businesses to protect their intellectual property – brand marks, content, proprietary processes, logos, and even the colors of their uniforms. In the conversation, the trio looks at relatively easy ways to copyright materials as well as more complex legal measures such as trademark registration, trade secret documentation, and patent prosecution.
Joe and Bryan also give examples of how small- and medium-sized clients have benefitted from Harness’ objective analysis of their business operations and product specifications. They discuss how, in one instance, a welding equipment manufacturer was able to regain market share lost to foreign competitors by redesigning and patenting the replacement tips necessary to draw a bead on substrate during the welding process. The two emphasized the importance of creating and maintaining a proactive culture that encourages and protects innovative ideas, processes, and products.
Joe is a patent attorney based in the firm’s Metro St. Louis office. He delivers legal and business solutions to even the most complicated patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and related litigation and licensing matters. Bryan is also based in the Metro St. Louis office and his practice focuses on preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications for clients in the medical device, consumer products, and agrifood tech industries.
NCMM provides critical data analysis, insights, and perspectives for companies, policymakers, and other key stakeholders in the middle markets of the economy.
