According to IAM:

“A prestigious and venerable boutique, Harness IP is entrusted by global corporations to take care of their most treasured intellectual assets. The group maintains over 15,000 patents worldwide and draws on deep industry and patent office knowledge to do so – 40% of its attorneys have previous engineering or research experience and many have in-house legal and USPTO experience.

The outfit has a number of sophisticated lawyers representing it in the Michigan chapter of the IAM Patent 1000: Paul Keller brings the distilled wisdom of nearly 40 years of experience to the table and is a highly proficient rights manager. Mark Elchuk works at the cutting edge in the aerospace area and is a sought-after opinion giver and prosecutor. David Suter is best described as a strategist – he is an astute deal negotiator, too. Bryant Wade is a go-to for Japanese companies whose needs, working style and business culture he understands well. An outstanding problem-solver, David Utykanski benefits from insight and experience in prosecution and litigation. Glenn Forbis specializes in patent litigation and is a measured presenter who can bring the heat when necessary.”

“For over a century, Harness IP has practised IP law at the cutting edge. Abundant in technical talent – many of its members have real-world engineering and scientific experience – the outfit also has plenty of former USPTO examiners and in-house counsel on deck, paving the way for a sophisticated service that removes all obstacles to effective rights protection. Harness IP’s line-up in St Louis is an impressive one, capable of providing total patent care.

One of the best for prosecution – at a firm that ranks highly at the national level among those obtaining the most patents – is Bryan Wheelock, who excels in the mechanical and electromechanical field. Michael Thomas maintains a busy prosecution roster, too, and is also a discerning choice of representative in post-grant proceedings. He is appreciated for his stellar client service, as is Joseph Walsh, a high-level strategist who applies a business-oriented mind in his counselling, litigation and licensing work. For lead counsel roles Matthew Cutler is the person to look to, though he manages portfolios with a deft touch and a heightened alertness to risk.

The IAM Patent 1000 shines a spotlight on the firms and individuals that are deemed outstanding in the pivotal area of patent law. IAM arrived at its 2022 rankings after an exhaustive qualitative research project to identify outstanding firms and individuals across multiple jurisdictions. When identifying the leading firms, factors such as depth of knowledge, market presence and the level of work on which they are typically instructed were all taken into account, as well as positive peer and client feedback.
