Research for the IP Stars rankings is rigorous and impartial. Analysts evaluate work data supplied by firms and, where applicable, review publicly available information such as court and IP office records. The research focuses on work done or concluded in the previous year, particularly case studies that were of great significance to clients and/or IP law and practice.

Managing IP magazine published its first legal directory in 1994 and rebranded it in 2013 as “IP Stars.” The publication quickly established itself as the leading specialist guide to IP law firms and practitioners worldwide. Research is conducted over a six-month period, starting in September annually.
