Derek Garsee’s practice focuses on all areas of patent law with a particular emphasis on patent prosecution. His experience as a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent examiner and his technical background in electronics and software engineering give Derek the ability to translate complex inventions into solid legal protections.

A recent law school graduate, Derek leverages his technical acumen to positively impact clients’ creativity and innovation. His practice is differentiated by a deep knowledge of technical complexity combined with sharp legal strategy. As a former USPTO patent examiner, he understands firsthand the necessity of intellectual property protection for inventors and has an invaluable working knowledge of the patent process. He has searched prior art to ensure that an invention is novel and nonobvious; reviewed patent applications to ensure conformity to formal and statutory requirements; and written Office Actions on patentability and formal responses to patent applicants.

Derek worked as a Summer Associate and Law Clerk at Harness IP prior to becoming an Associate. His experience at the USPTO gives him invaluable insight into the patent process, helping to ensure clients’ applications conform to and follow the office’s strict protocols. Conversely, he is able to analyze IP portfolios for vulnerability as well as opportunity.
